In Conversation with Daniel Emma, Industrial Designers. Melbourne, Australia.

An abundance of colour, incense and a sausage dog named Frank are just a few of the things you’ll find in Daniel Emma’s studio. Industrial Designers, Daniel and Emma, forming Daniel Emma, are the match made in heaven. The married couple aim to create the unexpected from simple objects that are “just nice”, but modesty aside, they have presented their work at over thirty exhibitions worldwide. We have had our eyes on this dream team for quite some time now and loved getting an insight into their studio lives.

Hi Daniel and Emma! Can you tell us a bit about yourselves.

We are industrial designers. We also happen to be married! We established our studio Daniel Emma in 2009, after a 2-year stint living and working in London.

How would you describe your studio practice?

Our studio enables us to express our thoughts and inspirations through design. We work on a large variety of projects, ranging from desk objects to larger scale installations. We look to create the unexpected from simple objects using simple forms, drawing influence and insight from the diverse culture that Australia presents us with. Most importantly our designs aim to be ‘just nice’.

What is your work inspired by?

We inspire each other (even though this sounds super cheesy!) Our inspiration is found in ordinary everyday things, such as food, travel and childhood memories.

How did you get started in the industry?

Studying Industrial Design at the University of South Australia.

Do you have a favourite project?

It seems as though the most recently completed project always manages to be a favourite. But our top 2 would be our room ‘HOME’ for the Rigg Design Prize at the NGV in 2015 and our exhibition ‘PAK-UH-JING’ at Hugo Michell Gallery earlier this year

What are the ‘must-haves’ in your studio?

Colour, nice smells, and our sausage dog Frank (who doesn’t always smell particularly nice!)

What is important to you in your studio space?

Hot cups of tea, lighting a candle or incense, keeping things tidy and starting and ending the day in a timely fashion.
